Going back to 1783, when balloons were the thing...So important, their advent opened up another world of endless possibilities. On such a day,229 years ago, the 1st man to ascend in a tethered balloon did it- French scientist Jean Pilatre de Rozier. His hot-air Montgolfier balloon went up to 84 feet - the length of the rope holding the balloon. (OTM)
On the subject of some of the benefits reaped out of aviation-I consider the speed element as one of the most imperative ones. Going back to 1913 when Lieutenant Ronin made the 1st official airmail flight in France. (AYY)
I always count aviation pioneers and enthusiasts as the most inveterate risk takers who value the zest that comes with it rather than the shame and abashment of not achieving their targets. Take for example, the not-so-simple act of defying the normal order of events-gravity. Now underrated because it has already been done, but then, it was so unbelievable. What about the courage to fly across a large mass of water, Today, we all go back to 1927 and honor Captain Dieudonne´ who landed in Brazil and became the 1st person to fly non-stop across the South Atlantic. The 2100-mile flight took just over 18 hours. (AYY)
